What is the Best Paper Shredder For You?

February 2nd, 2012

Seems like an odd question to ask, but it is relevant! Paper shredders are a necessity to protect sensitive information. It’s safe, it’s smart and in some cases it’s the law. Shredding confidential information can protect you and your business from security breaches, identity theft, and in some cases, it can help you comply with privacy legislation. Here is everything you would ever need to know when shopping for a good paper shredder.

There are different levels of shredding to consider. The higher the security, the higher the investment (but it is worthwhile).

High Security offers the most secure cut and is virtually impossible to reassemble. Should be used for highly sensitive or top secret documents including financial, medical, personnel and proprietary information. Ideal for high productivity areas such as military and governmental agencies where classified and restricted information is handled.

Micro-Cut offers strong security for sensitive documents and confidential information such as, but not limited to, legal and bank documents, medical or personnel records
or proprietary research. Great for financial institutions, human resources and marketing departments within corporations and hospitals.

Cross-Cut offers security for confidential documents such as credit and college applications, banking and insurance papers and interoffice documents. Ideal for use in areas of moderate productivity such as credit and insurance agencies, colleges and universities and small businesses.

Strip-Cut Economical security for internal small office or home information. Good for personal use and low or nonsensitive information.

Look for these additional smart features:

Jam Prevention Features There are two basic types of jam prevention features which reduce wear on the shredder motor and extend the life of the machine:
“Jam-free” Uses built-in technology to sense and power through tough jobs so that paper jams are eliminated.
“Auto-reverse” Immediately reverses the paper feed when a jam occurs, thus preventing a worse jam.

Specialty Shredding Destroys CDs, credit cards, staples and paper clips.

Greener Choices Energy-saving features reduce energy consumption and costs.

Self-Oiling Feature Reservoir holds shredder oil and automatically releases it at periodic intervals to enhance the performance of the cutters and prolong the life of the shredder.

Sheet Capacity The number of sheets that can be shred at once.

High Throughput Throughput is the maximum number of sheets that can be shred in one minute. (Sheet capacity × single sheet speed = throughput.) The higher the throughput capacity the faster your shredding will get done!

Behind the Scenes at Office Supply Sanity

December 30th, 2011

Our philosophy at Chicago School Supply is we make business personal. Our staff works hard to get to know our customers. But how well do you know us? This month, we want to feature one of the valuable members of the Chicago School Supply family, Megan Wehrle.

Megan is the Chicago School Supply Customer Service Manager/Marketing Manager and has been with us since the summer of 2010. Her job is to answer any questions customers may have about products, pricing, shipping and ordering. She is also here to help customers place orders over the phone and help with any issues that may arise with products that are damaged or need to be returned. Here is what she had to say when we asked her a few questions recently:

Tell us about your background.
I grew up in La Grange, a suburb of Chicago, with my younger brother and my Mom. After high school I moved moved to Tampa Florida where she attended the University of South Florida (USF) and graduated with a BA in English. After graduating, I lived in Arlington, Texas where I worked as an office manager for a growing distribution company, expanding her expertise in customer/client services and office management before coming back home to the Windy City.

What is the best part of your job?
No day is exactly the same and because of that I learn something new every day. I have been in the customer service field for 10 years and I enjoy interacting with customers and being able to help them the best I can! It is always satisfying to be able to help someone.

What are the goals for Office Supply Sanity for 2012?
Our number one goal is to our customers and the service we provide to them. Our goal is to give the customer personalized, one on one service and help with any needs they have. We are looking to improve our communication with our social media outlets such as Facebook and Twitter. We want to utilize these outlets to help introduce the newest products that have hit the market and offer discounts and giveaways to some of our fans. This is also a great way to interact with our customers, and if they are not already a fan they should look us up to see what we have going on this month!

What message would you like to share with your customers?
We want to hear from our customers! There is always room for growing and improving, so we are starting a new program that allows our customers to give us feedback to help serve them better. Whenever an order is placed a short survey will be emailed out to them, and we would love to hear about their experience with us!

Why is OSS different than the big office retail chains?
We offer personalized customer service and because we are not a big chain corporation we are able to give more attention to each customer. We are big enough to meet the customers office needs, but small enough to care. We offer next day shipping on over 60,000 in stock products, with free delivery on orders over $100!

We know there are other “office supply” options out there and YOU the customer are what make us operate. We appreciate your business!

Which Time Management Tools Are Right for You?

November 18th, 2011

The end of the year is approaching and it will soon be time to update your calendars and organizers.   Personal organizers can make life much more manageable at work and at home.

Choosing the right time management tools really depends on your preferences and needs.  Are you detailed oriented?  Are you keeping track of family activities?  Clients?  Travel Schedule?  Here are some factors to consider:

Format—Do you plan by the minute, the hour, the week or the month?
Size—Will you use your planner at your desk or travel with it?
Scheduling needs—Do you keep track of yourself or multiple people?
Personal style—Want to reflect your favorite causes? Want something professional or something with flair?

  • Appointment books show a day, week, or month at a time to help keep busy schedules in order.  Best for: Administrators, detail-oriented perfectionists, and those who schedule their own appointments.
  • Group appointment books are geared toward offices with multiple schedules to track, such as medical and law practices.
  • Planners & organizers are often refillable and can include notepads, storage and telephone/address sections. Best for: Multi-taskers, business travelers, salespeople.
  • Desk calendars & pads keep the day or month in sight, plus they offer space to jot down reminders or appointments and many feature soothing photography and inspirational quotes. Best for: Managers, administrators, professionals.
  • Wall calendars show a month or more so multiple people can easily coordinate. Best for: Long-term planning and big-picture thinkers
  • Erasable planning boards are great for managers who track employee work and vacation schedules or project timelines and for educators who track student jobs and assignments.  Best for: Keeping track of project deadlines, production schedules, vacation or weekly schedules.

Want to be more productive at home or at work? STOP MULTI-TASKING!

November 10th, 2011

So you can text on your iPhone, surf the web, answer your non stop emails instantly all while sitting in on an important phone conference. Pretty efficient right? Wrong! Staying busy does not mean you are an effective worker. In fact, in 2009 researchers at Stanford University concluded that chronic multi taskers actually impair cognitive abilities.

From the article Media multitaskers pay mental price, Stanford study shows

People who are regularly bombarded with several streams of electronic information do not pay attention, control their memory or switch from one job to another as well as those who prefer to complete one task at a time, a group of Stanford researchers has found.

“When they’re in situations where there are multiple sources of information coming from the external world or emerging out of memory, they’re not able to filter out what’s not relevant to their current goal,” said Anthony Wagner, an associate professor of psychology. “That failure to filter means they’re slowed down by that irrelevant information.”

Here are some other stats that might make you want to consider slowing down:

  • A study from the Institute of Psychiatry at the University of London suggests that your IQ falls 10 points when you’re fielding constant emails, text messages, and calls, the same loss you’d experience if you missed an entire night’s sleep!
  • In 2007, a group of Microsoft workers took, on average, 15 minutes to return to serious mental tasks, such as writing reports or computer code, after dealing with incoming email. They wandered off to reply to other messages or browse the Web.- New York Times, 3/25/2007
  • Open screens on desktops, files on the desk, and coworkers all distracted workers so that only 55% of work was resumed immediately. Productivity in the business sector has been increasing by only 3% since 2000.- Herman Miller Inc., “The Siren Song of Multitasking,” 2007
  • The cost of interruptions to the U.S. economy is estimated at $588 billion a year.- Jonathan B. Spira, “The Cost of Not Paying Attention,” Basex Research, 2005
  • Employees spend an average of 36 minutes per day at work on personal tasks. – Office Team surveys, February 2007
  • Organizations lose around $1,250 per user in annual productivity because of time spent dealing with spam, $1,800 unnecessary emails from co-workers, $2,100 – $4,100 due to poorly written communications.- Tom Pisello, ITBusinessEdge.com, 12/2008
  • Personal internet use (34%), socializing with co-workers (20.3%) and conducting personal business (17%) are the leading time-wasting activities. – Salary.com, 7/2007
